This is a real Soviet steam locomotive manufactured in the USSR before the Second World War .. This copy is a party to the war, he was carrying trains with arms on the front and has a few holes in his body from shrapnel and bombs.
Well, it's not quite as black and white as that - nor is there actually that much of a nationalism going on here. Protectionist is perhaps the better word. Naturally after so many hundreds of years of various foreign rule they have their sore spots especially after Soviet occupation. These days once the dust has had a chance to settle they are also preserving what's left of that heritage as well. They did go a little crazy here right after the fall of Soviet rule - but most countries did. As a foreigner and journalist living here for 7 years though I can say that just don't believe in everything you might read in Russia regarding Estonians etc. But I'm sure you know that I just personally wish they would repaint the stars back on those old black trains. It somehow makes them look majestic. Cheers!
